Laser dentistry is producing exciting advances in dental care. So, what is it, and how does it work?

A laser in the hands of a dentist is a precision instrument that generates a thin, very narrow beam of extremely intense light. When laser light comes in contact with tissue, it can vaporize or shape soft and hard tissue. For this reason, laser dental surgery offers numerous advantages over traditional dental surgery and can help to restore the health of your gums quickly, in a minimally-invasive manner.

Various dental procedures may be performed with a laser. These include:

– Teeth whitening activation
– Cavity detection
– Decay removal
– Hardening (curing) of composite fillings
– Removal or reshaping of tissues for proper fitting restorations
– Elimination of issues which hamper normal tongue movement (tongue tie)
– Alleviation of lip pulls
– Biopsy
– Removal of sores and lesions
– Multiple gum abnormalities such as removal of swollen tissues caused by medication

There are great advantages in using laser treatment over older forms of dental surgery. With lasers, we are able to remove gum tissue without causing bleeding because the laser automatically cauterizes blood vessels and nerve endings. Less bleeding means greater visibility for the dentist to perform the surgery. There also is less pain and swelling. Lasers used for cavity preparation often eliminate the need for any local anesthetic.
