Almost half of all American adults suffer from gum disease. Some of the symptoms of gum disease include bleeding gums, or gums that are swollen or tender. Loose teeth and bad breath can also be symptoms. If your gum disease is left untreated, you can suffer from bad breath, lost teeth and even damage to your jaw bone.

Gum disease has different causes, but the main cause is from the accumulation of plaque and tartar on your teeth. As plaque builds up, your gums swell, and this allows the plaque and bacteria to work its way below the gum line. If caught early enough, our dentist, Dr. Donald Roman may be able to address the problem with a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planning. Scaling and root planning is a two-step process. During the first step, the dentist will remove the plaque and tartar from both above and below your gum line. In the second step, often done in a subsequent visit, the dentist will clean and smooth the roots of your teeth so that they can form a healthy attachment to your jaw. A local anesthetic may be needed during this step.
